Lawnix Website launch
Lawnix

The ILTA Open Source peer group has launched the Lawnix project. Lee Decker of Moore & Van Allen in Charlotte North Carolina will be coordinating this project. The goal of the Lawnix project is to coordinate an effort to create an opensource desktop for the legal industry.

ILTA members will have a one stop website for links, collaboration, software vendor communications, and support. If you are an ILTA member and would like to contribute to this site, please register as a user and contact the site administrators.

We've been piloting Firefox for the last year, and have found it to work very well. We are considering making it the default browser for the firm.

Has anyone found any legal research related sites that don't work with Firefox?

Proxy server project started
Lawnix

Scott Farrell, of Torkin Manes Cohen Arbus LLP, in Toronto Canada is spearheading an effort to document a free proxy server configuration for law firms. The project is based on the Squid proxy server. If you're interested in evaluating or helping with the documentation, please contact Scott.

Fairly-Secure Anti-SPAM Gateway

ILTA member Scott Vintinner from Robinson, Bradshaw and Hinson, P.A, in Charlotte North Carolina has provided us a link to his wiki which details his "Fairly-Secure Anti-SPAM Gateway" documentation project. This site provides an excellent in-depth step-by-step tutorial which can guide the installer through the process of securing the firm email portal. The wiki can be found here.

Legal Software Compatibility database
Lawnix

The ILTA Linux Peer Group has initiated an effort to document Linux compatibilty of software written for law firms. Legal software vendors have been asked to certify whether their applications:

1. Run natively on Linux

2. Run in a WINE environment (or passed Codeweavers certification)

3. Or is accessible with non-IE web browser

Chris Hatch of Harrang, Long, Gary Rudnick, P.C., is maintaining the vendor database.
